Well, it’s almost that time of year again.
I’ll be 42 on 1/20 (yep, not afraid to say my real age!)

Instant gratification?

Posted by Tara Burner on December 20, 2009

Are we in an instant gratification society now?
According to UrbanDictionary.com it means 1)immediate satisfaction; the quick attainability of happiness or of contentness.
Yep, that sounds about right!

Food is now instant, you can take something from box to microwave and have a “meal” in matter of a minute rather than cook from scratch. We have instant coffee, instant potatoes, fast food, etc.

We can get emails within seconds rather than wait for snail mail for days or more.

Those with Blackberries, iPhones, Gphones, etc. you can get Facebook and Twitter updates no matter where you are and in a millisecond.

We have express overnight mail and priority mail now to speed up the process of snail mail. However, even then apparently people still want that instant gratification, but yet at the same time complain about the price of shipping. Yes, stamps are .44 at this time and priority flat rate box is almost $5.00. Yet show me how you can get from say Florida to Alaska to deliver a package for $5.00 or less! Show me how you can get your letter from point A to point B for less than .44
People are complaining about the cost of shipping yet, I know I can’t physically get my letter or package anywhere myself for less than what USPS charges.

What does that have to do with instant gratification you may ask?
Recently I sold a lot of things on eBay and through my Affordable Mineral Makeup company and people were less than friendly when they didn’t get their items almost instantly!
Some eBay items were listed as being shipped via Parcel Post (because of weight/size of item it’d have cost more than most would want to ship if offered via Priority Mail) and yet the same people who complain that they do not want to pay priority shipping do still want priority arrival time. Parcel post takes longer to deliver…you know the saying “you get what you pay for”, if you want faster delivery…pay for priority! One should not expect to get a parcel post package in 3 days (unless you’re local to the originating zip code), so there really isn’t any need to email the seller reaming them out about what’s taking so long. Additionally, are we so lazy that when provided with tracking information rather than copy/paste that into USPS track/confirm we’d instead spend more time emailing a nasty email to seller because somehow that’s going to make the package you wanted shipped “cheaper” to get there faster?

Orders being shipped out of country obviously take longer and especially during the holiday season. However, try to explain that to some who find it much easier to ream the seller out and demand answers as to where their order is. Yet, the time they invested in sending emails they could have easily spent tracking the item to see where it is or contacting their customs and postal services with tracking information to find out exactly what the status is. Is it unrealistic to think a package going from one country overseas to another may take awhile?

When there appears to be a problem with an item that is insured are we so lazy that instead of filing an insurance claim with the carrier, we make excuses and try to pass it off on someone else? The issue could be resolved simply by spending few minutes with the carrier, file the insurance claim and get your money back but instead one will spend a lot more time sending nasty emails rather than do the required act of filing a claim with the carrier. That goes against the instant gratification concept to a degree and just equates to being lazy or not wanting to have to do something themselves to resolve their own problem. That person wants someone else to give them instant gratification and handle the issue for them, rather than them taking their misguided ranting cussing emails and instead spending that time dealing one on one with carrier to resolve the issue.

I know I sponsor 3 children via Compassion International and it takes approximately 2 months for communication with the children. Our letters have to go to the main department, then to the country where the child is, then a translator has to translate the letter, then deliver to the child. Is that an unreasonable amount of time? I don’t think so. Yes, I’d like them to get my mail sooner as I’d like to receive theirs back sooner and know what they’ve been doing,  but is that reasonable or even feasible? No!

Life isn’t about instant gratification and if one expects that they should receive it in all matters, they’re in for disappointment.

How can a society that exists on instant mashed potatoes, packaged cake mixes, frozen dinners, and instant cameras teach patience to its young? ~Paul Sweeney

Back to school business creativity

Posted by Tara Burner on August 18, 2009

I just had an “a-ha” moment while posting on Facebook when I posted “Do U know what U want to accomplish? are you working towards that goal?”
and my good friend Jill made a comment of “absolutely and next week watch out i got big plans”.

See, Jill has 3 kids, 2 dogs, her own business, her hubby’s business and has an insane summer schedule of baseball, bowling, beach and all kinds of other stuff.

She’s like many others who own their own business and have the freedom of making their own schedule. Summer time is a time we business owners look forward to…no more getting kids up at the crack of dawn to encounter the “one more minute” whine which ends up us dragging them out of bed to get to school on time (or not on time for some of us), no more ’schedule’, no more sitting in traffic lines to drop off kids and 6 hours later doing it again…freedom to simply enjoy whatever the day brings at whatever time it brings!

Well, now our free time is coming to an end with school starting next week (for some of us) and time to restructure our schedules. If you’re a business owner, you know you are still open to do what you want but are limited by a school schedule. For some this may be good because during the summer  the beach, activities, travel and all the fun stuff postpone business projects, putting them on ‘hold’ until school starts. Many enjoy, relax, have fun during summer and once school starts and kids are back to school and gone from home for 4-6 hours that gives many business owners more creative time. Time to produce new products or services, time to learn more, time to market more, time to focus on business more.

So, while we all enjoy summer and the freedoms and fun that come with it…you can also benefit your businesses and grow even more so while kids are in school. This is not to say that businesses weren’t creative during summer, but many people don’t work their business as strongly during summer as they do during the school year…hey, life’s to be enjoyed and we know what they say about all work no play…

backtoschool

With that said, what are you going to be working on when the kids all go back to school?
a new project?
a new business?
school for yourself?
new products?
comment below, let everyone know what you’ll be working towards accomplishing.

Fasting

Posted by Tara Burner on August 10, 2009

As some of you know, I used to have a blog set up specifically for fasting…
I’ve combined that with my main blog here and will start fresh.
Months ago, I did a 90 day fast with some surprising results and insight.

I feel the need to embark on another fast right now.
For mind, body and spiritual reasons.

I need to get closer spiritually, listen for some answers, direct my path, as well as break a few non healthy habits (damn that mt dew–yes yes I know…not good-least I admit it! lol)

Meanwhile, I’m working on a few new certifications, working on new goals and feel this is the perfect time to start another fast.
I don’t know if it’ll be 14, 21, 40 days or even longer.
While the ‘authorities’ say that a habit can be broke in 21 days, I’m living proof that’s not necessarily true.
So, I’ll just take this fast day by day and see where it leads and how I am progressing with my reasons for it.
I’ll post when I’m lead to share something here.

Things learned while traveling:

Posted by Tara Burner on July 24, 2009

Well, I’m back and semi caught up after an 8 day trip which included 13 different states, and 3600+ miles of driving…1560 of that driving solo..from Pembroke Pines, FL to Madison, WI to various parts of PA then back to Pembroke Pines, FL

I have 2 ‘confessions’:
one: I did not drive ‘green’…sorry but some of the states speed limits were 55 and well when doing that much driving in that short amount of time, I had to go faster..I was on a mission to get to my destination…not ‘green’ of me but in my defense my Scion XB still got 28-31 mpg so I dont feel as bad….
two: everyone who knows me knows I do not allow Splenda or sucralose (splenda disguised with different name) in my house…well knowing I had to drive 1560 miles alone, I got some “Red Line” 7 hour energy drink…which does contain small amount of sucralose…now you’ll see mention of this in a minute..but wanted to get my ‘confessions’ out of the way first lol

Here are some things I learned while traveling (in no particular order):

  • It is possible for a grown adult to sleep in the back seat of a 2009 Scion XB if tired enough
  • Consuming Red Line energy drink, Mt Dew and tea fat burners together has no effect whatsoever on me and didn’t help me stay awake at all. I could have easily fallen asleep…what a waste that was!
  • Illinois is one heck of a long boring state to drive thru from the southern most end to the northern most end–sorry to those who live there but corn fields (as much as I love corn I’d have liked some scenery), rain and wind turbines is all I saw for hours and hours and hours
  • il

  • It’s harder than I thought to drive and take pictures out the window when doing 80+mph (note to self: pay attention to flash and side mirrors duh!)
  • sunset

  • Chicago traffic sucks
  • chicagotraffic

  • Road construction sucks
  • Floridians drive defensively while other states drive aggressively or they’re just simply inept…not sure which
  • Only Virginia rest area had a recycling bin along the route
  • virginiarecycling

  • Indiana…wow…I paid like $8 tolls and they had no normal clean of decent size rest rooms…their rest areas were a parking lot with a little building which I assume was a bathroom…looked to creepy to even pull into
  • Illinois has lots of wind turbines–green thumbs up to them for that
  • ilwindturbines1

  • If one doesn’t like going thru tunnels, don’t try going to the east side of PA via turnpike from the west side of PA lol-when you see signs saying “Take off sunglasses” and “turn on lights” and “stay in your lane” those are sure signs of tunnel coming up…gee and I thought the signs just knew it was getting dark/cloudy out when it said to take off my sunglasses!
  • Shag carpet can last at least 37 years…not saying it “should” but it does and does in fact still exist in people’s homes
  • All the zillions of “South of the Border” signs are no longer up and apparently South of the Border is pretty crappy now too–didn’t stop…grabbed pic as driving by!
  • southoftheborder

  • It is possible to run a zoo for free (donations) and have it be nice! In fact much nicer than Miami Metro Zoo! Smaller…but waaaaaaaaaaay nicer! and run on donations!
  • madisonzoo

  • New sight for DD: diagonal crosswalk and it talked too!
  • crosswalk

  • Cell phones will all start bleeping, ringing, texting all at same time once re-entering service area. Cell phones don’t ‘roam’ so well in waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out country area
  • Spring water tastes soooooooooooooooooooo good and is cold!
  • springwater

  • When GPS says you’re going to reach destination after destination closes, it is possible to speed up and ‘beat the GPS’, reaching destination just in time!
  • Always have a back up plan for your back up plan when concerning care of animals!
  • Remember to have someone water garden if you want to come back to anything that had been growing to be still growing! :(
  • If you don’t like where you currently live, if you go away for awhile, you may just come back with a new appreciation for that area
  • It’s amazing how much ’stuff’ one can pack in a Scion XB, so those who make fun of “the box” should see how much room there really is!
  • Pay attention to the amps on items when using triple adapters for things in the car…not all will manage a DVD player, GPS and flip between cell phone charger and cooler! You can blow part of it out then you’re left with two outlets to alternate items with!
  • Some childhood things will not remain the same 25+yrs later…parks and playgrounds change!
  • Things that you remember as being so big as a child can be soooooo small as an adult
  • There are entirely way too many “adult stores” on the highways…but hey some offer pet care while you shop…yep so while you’re on your family vacation with Fido or Spot…you can go ’shopping’ and they’ll watch your dog…family vacation! lol
  • WI has wind turbines (why doesn’t FL?)
  • wiwindturbines

  • Sometimes texting while driving is a good thing…can prevent you from getting a speeding ticket! I slowed down to text my son & noticed unmarked SC cop off in bushes…had I not been texting, I’d have blown by him! so see, texting and driving can be a good thing at times!
  • Good idea to really load the iPod with lots lots of songs or be prepared to memorize the ones on there and listen to them over and over and over during 3600 miles of driving!
  • Pondering why rest areas do not offer juice or healthy snacks in vending machines?!
  • In many states, people have yet to grasp the concept that slower vehicles should be in right lane and leave the left lane for those of us who like to drive the speed limit or plus
  • It’s always good to get back home (who’d ever think I’d say I actually like South Florida!)

Business Reputation & Integrity

Posted by Tara Burner on April 14, 2009

Today I’ve had to deal with a few minor issues with some consultants of mine who represent Affordable Mineral Makeup.
Thus the reason for this blog covering important things like:
Responsibility
Integrity
Reputation

Now, there used to be a time when I didn’t use my full name…didn’t feel the need to, didn’t feel that it ‘meant’ anything.
However, now I am my name: Tara Burner.
My name means something.
My name is my reputation, my personality, my character, my business.
My name has value.
My name has traits and characteristics associated with it that I hold proudly.

As per dictionary.com
Integrity: adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.
Reputation: a favorable and publicly recognized name or standing for merit, achievement, reliability, etc.: to build up a reputation.
Responsibility: a particular burden of obligation upon one who is responsible: the responsibilities of authority.
Accountability: the state of being accountable, liable, or answerable.

business woman

Now, as a business owner my personal name is also attached to my business.
The traits associated with my name carry over into my business, thus anyone who works for me must also match the values of my business as well as my name.
While I have independent consultants who represent Affordable Mineral Makeup, they also then represent me…Tara Burner.

Represent: to stand or act in the place of, as a substitute, proxy, or agent does: He represents the company in Boston.

Now, if someone is representing the company they need to do so in a professional manner that matches what my business is about as well as my name. Not only is my business reputation on the line, but so is my personal reputation and the value of my name.

I had a rep of mine today respond to me by saying “Please don’t feel responsible for my group”, after I informed everyone that if they form groups that are representing my company that they need to be active, professional, post information, etc.

She is sadly mistaken. Because I am responsible for anything and everything that my reps do and say. It’s a reflection on not only my company, but me personally.  I’m responsible for all their actions when they’re representing my company. Thus, I do whatever it takes to ensure that my company, my business, my name are presented appropriately and professionally.

I’m not sure why this is so difficult for some to grasp.
Does their own name mean nothing to them?
Do they not care what people think of them and/or their business skills?
Does my company mean nothing to them?
Do they not realize the importance of professionalism?
Do they not realize that they represent me personally as well as professionally?
Do they not realize that if they don’t conduct themselves in a manner suitable that they can trash my reputation that I’ve worked to develop…one of which people know if they order from my company they get their orders shipped out quickly, efficiently and professionally?
Do none of these things matter?
Do they have no concern for their own self worth, dignity, respect?
Do they not realize that if their actions remain lax and “half hearted” that they’ll find that nobody will do business with them, nor trust them or hold them in confidence?
Perhaps they don’t realize any of these things because it’s not their reputation on the line but also mine!
Now, that just shows me that the person really either doesn’t care or doesn’t understand the importance of doing business in a reputable professional manner and well…there’s no room for that in my business.
I will not permit others to trash my name or my reputation that I’ve built for years.
So, word of advice: when doing business and working for a company as an independent representative or distributor…value that company and the owners, officials, other representatives and their reputation and their name…like you should value your own!

You are a seeker. You often find yourself restless – and you have a lot of questions about life.

You tend to travel often, to fairly random locations. You’re most comfortable when you’re far away from home.

You are quite passionate and easily tempted. Your impulses sometimes get you into trouble. You are usually the best at everything … you strive for perfection.

You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.

You have the classic “Type A” personality.

You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You’re always up to something.

You have a ton of energy, and most people can’t handle you. You’re very intense.

You definitely are a handful, and you’re likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.
