When working as an independent distributor, rep, consultant

According to Dictionary.com the word independent means:
working for oneself or for a small, privately owned business.
not relying on another or others for aid or support.
not subject to another’s authority or jurisdiction; autonomous; free: an independent businessman.

However; in the direct sales business world, independent should really mean something more like:
separate from main company, yet still under the authority of main company though responsible for making an effort to promote the business or you will fail on your own, though you have support and guidance and marketing tools provided to you from main company.
