Obsessive Chemical Funk Smells, Perfumes, etc

Posted by Tara Burner on November 30, 2008

News: Co workers can sue over excessive perfume in the work place.

I personally love this article (even though I’ve just now received a few nasty emails from others online for my sharing the article..oh well) by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger because it points out many things that I and many others have to deal with on a daily basis.

I’ve had to leave the movies, lines I’m waiting in, the mall (I can’t go in any major dept store because all those pushy spray happy perfume women who spray then ask..that’s asking for retaliation by me if they attempt to spray me), restaurants, wherever…all because of people and their desire to bathe in perfume, or chemically scented laundry detergent, dryer sheets, etc. If I’m around those chemical funk smells, I get an instant vein throbbing migraine. You can literally see the veins in my temples throbbing. Same goes for candles, air fresheners (ask my daughters aunt how many times I’ve pulled her air fresheners out of the outlets at youth group!), anything that has a fake smell does me in. It’s instant migraine and sometimes heart rate speeds up, other side effects too. I can’t go down the aisles in stores with cleaners in them, I can’t go in stores that sell candles..sorry Bed Bath & Beyond, but your candle aromas knock me on my butt as soon as I walk through the door and have to turn right around and leave. Wonder if they realize that there are many who can’t be around synthetic fake smells and they lose business because of their overwhelming displays of candles right at the door?

Some people think something isn’t “clean” unless it smells like bleach or “lemony fresh”. Too bad the “lemony fresh” is usually some chemical funk, if it were at least lemon essential oil then I might stand a fighting chance at being able to be around it.

Some people have taken offense and gotten in an uproar because finally those who have suffered health effects at the hands of others can finally take action against the person wearing too much perfume. I say about time! I mean really, we’ve fortunately now have bans on smoking in public places. I think the same should be done about having people who have too much perfume, cologne or other fragrance about them. I’ve blogged about this numerous times in past and was glad to see the article online a bit ago.

I fortunately work for myself, so don’t have to deal with this in the work place. But every time I walk out my door I get nailed with the chemical funk of various laundry products coming through neighbors dryer vents and sadly there’s nothing I can do about that, other than run down the stairs as fast as I can to escape the impending migraine that follows.

So, to those who want to wear all the harmful chemicals, bathe in them, wash & dry your clothes in them…that’s your problem, not mine until your smells invade where I am. I opt to leave the area in order to save my head & my health, so don’t cop an attitude because I choose to not inhale and because I agree with the article NaturalNews.com.

So, don’t take offense and think we simply don’t “like” your perfume or cleaners, etc….some of us can not be around them for health reasons…perhaps educate yourselves on the health effects of all the chemicals you’re inhaling, wearing, bathing in and then maybe you’ll understand why we don’t want to be around.

Dying to go shopping at Walmart

Posted by Tara Burner on November 28, 2008

You might just do that…
die that is..or get trampled and injured.

This happened this morning apparently:
Worker dies at Long Island Walmart

This isn’t the first time someone has lost their life on Black Friday at Walmart.

I just don’t get it.
Ok, first off it’s Walmart for crying out loud. Why does anyone want to go there and get crap made in China anyhow?
But, ok fine…to each his/her own, you want to shop there…that’s your business.

But do you want to shop there at risk of life or injury? Is it worth it? I mean can you imagine how the family of the person who got killed there will be affected. He was probably just trying to make a living and it cost him his life. That’ll affect his family and loved ones, their lives have been permanently and forever changed all because a rampage of idiotic people were in a rush to get some dollar store crap to give as gifts to their loved ones. I just do not grasp this!

Those who know me, know I boycott Walmart and hate shopping anywhere on any given day…and refuse to come out on Black Friday.

When did materialism become so important that it’s worth killing for? I mean, really that’s what the people did who trampled the worker and the others. They killed and injured and changed people’s lives today all in the pursuit of cheap crap.

What happened to holiday joy, cheer, gratitude, courtesy, kindness?
The holidays should be full of that…not death, injury, loss, selfishness, greed, materialism.
I’m not that old (ok, so I’m pushing 41, that’s still not old). But sorry, I just don’t get it. Nothing is worth what took place and sadly seems to take place yearly and especially at Walmart.

It’s a sad sad day.

On a side note, my friend Laurie Ayers had posted a blog about Shame on you Walmart, you may want to read that as well.

Direct Matches Spam

Posted by Tara Burner on November 21, 2008

How many have received the emails from weird email addresses that go something like this
“This is SoandSo, I have a question about your business, please call me back at xxx-xxx-xxxx.
Thank you
SoandSo”

I suppose I should be glad he said thank you.

But seriously, what happens with most these emails is this:

You, not realizing it’s more likely a ploy for a Direct Matches person to have you call them so they can try to sell you their service, you go ahead and call.
You’ll then get their whole sales speech and slimy tactics to get you to become a member with them.
No matter how many times you tell them you’re not interested, no matter how many times you try to tell them about your business, they just do not listen. You finally get to the point where no matter how polite you may be, you can see the only way out is to hang up on them. Don’t worry, it’s ok…it was your dime anyhow calling them back, you’re allowed to hang up.
None the while, were they ever interested in you, your business or anything other than getting you to become one of them.

Now, I’m sure there’s probably a few decent non spamming people who are affiliated with D.M but I’ve yet to meet one myself.
I now hit delete on those emails, don’t call, don’t respond.

Now, you may be thinking “how can you tell it’s someone trying to spam you”
Well… I just do. Been there, experienced it a few times and now just go with the good ole’ gut feeling and instinct and know who’s legit and who’s not. It’s worked thus far.

Most people, if truly interested in your business or wanting more information from you will say more than that in their email. Not just vague I want more info, call me….

Which leads to my next thought, if you use that ploy to get clients, orders…DON’T! It really doesn’t work or pay off in the long run.

Be real, be genuine, be honest.
Works so much better for you and you won’t have people blogging about your spam tactics.

Giving…tis the season, now and every day

Posted by Tara Burner on November 19, 2008

givingworld.jpg

With the onset of the holiday season, many are getting in the giving mood. For years I’ve yet to figure out why people are giving from November until January and not the rest of the year. Somehow it just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. This past weekend, I blogged about tithing, giving and helping, but this evening’s blog is more related to the holidays and giving.

Every imaginable organization, foundation and need comes to the public eye in November. We have kids in need, we have the poor, the hungry, the widowed. We have those who simply can’t make ends meet, we have Veterans who need assistance and the list goes on and on. While I think we all should help the charities we feel moved to help during the holidays, I also believe we need to make giving a part of our daily lives. It’s something that should be done each and every day, not just from November thru January. There are sick kids, poor, hungry, injured people every day of the year…why not help through out the year as well. Everyone can easily donate and give during the holidays since it’s expected but can you give when you don’t have it in your face reminding you? I hope so.

When you give to others, when you help others not only are you helping improving their lives, you’re changing yours as well. One can’t give and not feel happy about it, you know that warm fuzzy emotion that rises from within and comes out either in the form of a smile, a jump for joy, pure happiness and satisfaction. Consider all the benefits you’ll receive if you make an effort to give & help someone in need.
jumpingonbeach.jpg

A few of my personal favorites and where I give are:

Compassion International where I’ve sponsored 2 girls – one from Columbia, one from Thailand. You can read more about more the experience here. This is an ongoing, life changing way of helping a child in need.

A new effort was Feeding America which I learned about on twitter compliments of Mommy Gossip. I was glad to be a part of this drive.

I also like to help various people at Kiva. It’s a way to help people in business or getting into their own business by lending them money which they repay over time.

You can also find an A to Z Charity Listing here that lists countless charities you can help with.

If you don’t want to help with the big charities, you can also visit EveryDayActOfKindness.com where we have various organizations, individual people who are in need of your help.

Give:
verb, gave, giv⋅en, giv⋅ing, noun
–verb (used with object)
1. to present voluntarily and without expecting compensation; bestow

The Bible talks about giving through out the scriptures.
Take Mark 10:21:“Jesus looked at him and loved him. ‘One thing you lack,’ he said. ‘Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’

How many of us would be willing to do that? To just get rid of everything, giving it to the poor? Could you do that and trust that you have treasures in heaven?

A bit more feasible for the average person would be 2 Corinthians 9:10-11 “Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.”

Now we’re getting a bit closer to what more would be able to willingly do. However, even then many fall short. The more they get the more they decide to keep it all and not share, not give. Ultimately their ‘riches’ will dissipate and they’ll be one of the poor who they should have helped.

Another, Proverbs 19:17 “He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done.”

Now, same thing as all the others…you help, you give and you’ll get your rewards. Easy enough but yet so many feel they’re not in a position to give or perhaps just don’t feel the need. If only they knew.

And, lest we not forget Luke 6:38 “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

That scripture is used time and time again in churches especially when taking up an offering or tithe.

However, it proves a valid point…if you give a little, you’ll get a little…if you give a lot, you’ll get a lot. Works for me, what about you?

Business: doing & knowing

Posted by Tara Burner on

I have been impressed with the urgency of doing.
Knowing is not enough; we must apply.
Being willing is not enough; we must do.

Seems more and more people who proclaim to be in business are being less active. They know, yet aren’t doing what they know they need to do. Are they waiting for a bail out, because unless they’re a huge corporation who’s mismanaged their company, a bail out isn’t going to come. The only thing that is going to come to them is lack. They’re just sitting back waiting for business to come to them, relaxing on their computer or listening to their ipod thinking that somehow customers are going to give them business. Reality check people, it’s not going to happen. The “If you build it, they will come” concept only worked for Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams. It doesn’t work in real business.

I know some who are constantly talking about the economy, complaining about how ‘hard’ things are, how difficult their life is, etc. but yet do nothing to change it. They need more money…okay, so promote your business more, get a PT job, look into new opportunities…you do what you have to do. Keyword there would be do. Apparently they’d rather not do, just complain. Complaining won’t change their bank statements or cash in hand but doing would.

sitting.jpg

Like Nike’s tag “Just Do It”, that’s what you need to do. You know what you have to do, what you should be doing…get out there and DO IT already.

If you’re in need of additional income, when someone offers you an opportunity…take it…do it. What are you waiting for? You say you can’t because you don’t want to work outside of the house. Not a problem, there are jobs and opportunities you can do from the comfort of your own home. You just need to DO it. Is one of your ‘reasons’ why you can’t, because you’re trying to figure out when you can fit it in your schedule which right now consists of taking the kids to school, coming home and then complaining you have no money until it’s time to pick the kids back up? That’s not doing you any good at all. Be active!

Do you already have a business or an opportunity you’re working? Sales slow? Are you active? Are you doing?
You need to know your target market, you need to know how to attract them and do what it takes to get their trust and thus their business. You must market, advertise, network, mingle, be active…it’s that simple. If you do nothing, you’ll get nothing. Do something, you get something in return. This really isn’t rocket science, it’s common sense add in a business factor. If you market your product, network with others, get to know others and build trust, get and give referrals, and do all this consistently and actively you’ll be helping your business succeed.

Be active, do. You must apply the knowledge with action to survive. It’s your choice, be content with knowing what you should do to get what you want or actually going out there and actively getting what you want. You decide.

Eco Tuesday: How to Green your Thanksgiving

Posted by Tara Burner on November 18, 2008

cornucopiapie.jpg

It’s that time of the year, next week will be Thanksgiving. Time for family and friends to get together and celebrate. Many don’t know what they’re celebrating but they’re doing it! If you want to catch up what Thanksgiving is about visit here to refresh your memory.

Some view Thanksgiving as the day they can start putting up Christmas trees, decorations and then of course the ones who live for Black Friday which is the furthest thing from being green.

shoppingwoman.jpg

Want to be green, even for a day? Instead of doing Black Friday, do Buy Nothing Day (that’s what I do, course I don’t buy much on any given day anyhow).

I think the guys have a better idea about Thanksgiving (no offense to women, since I am one), but playing football all morning til the big game is on is much better than organizing a shopping plan for the following morning.

Meanwhile, here are 10 steps to an eco friendly holiday party. They’re easy, fun and creative; additionally, helping the environment which I’m sure our planet would be thankful for on this Thanksgiving Day.

Here are some other tips:
A drastic tip would be to have a vegan or vegetarian meal. Yep, that means no turkey or ham but, there are lots of delicious alternatives and you can get the recipes here at vegcoooking.com

I know that’s not realistic for a lot of people, so there will be many of you still out shopping. When you do go shopping, use a reusable bag.

Buy your foods locally. Don’t know where to do that,
LocalHarvest.org will show you where to get local foods.

If you are going to cook, then try to compost the fruit and vegetable trimmings, left overs.

Scrubber Sponge
Once done with the eating and cooking, you’ll have to do clean up. We know that’s never fun and takes awhile but with the Scrubber Sponge it scrubs of stuck on food, is perfect for washing dishes and is biodegradable, too.

carbon offset
If you’re traveling, consider buying carbon offsets to offset the damage done.
If traveling by car, make sure to inflate tires to proper amount and not taking lots of extra weight lugging down the vehicle.

I could go on and on but won’t because most people (like myself) don’t/won’t read long long blogs! lol
So, make whatever changes you can that you’re comfortable with and have a green Thanksgiving and a fun loving one full of gratitude!
