Gumbo Limbo Environmental Center

Posted by Tara Burner on June 30, 2008

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Gumbo Limbo located in Boca Raton, FL has a lot to offer visitors. It’s an excellent coastal and marine preserve.
From their butterfly garden and nature trails to towers that overlook the ocean. They have sea turtles and sharks in tanks along with some lobster and fish.

You can even adopt a turtle and help with the costs involved in raising, feeding it.

They have all kinds of events going on.

We visited Gumbo Limbo last week and it was an excellent time, just wandering and strolling the grounds, learning more about the marine life and simply enjoying nature.

A must visit for anyone in South Florida

Lack of common sense & courtesy could be scary!

Posted by Tara Burner on June 27, 2008

For the second time in two days I’ve had to go rescue idiot contractors from my doberman.

What happened to common sense, not to mention common courtesy when entering someone’s yard? I mean seriously, contractors for the phone and cable companies park their trucks then they put out the safety cones around their vans but yet they don’t take the two seconds to knock on the door to the person’s yard in which they’re about to enter. That’s just rude, not to mention unsafe here! It doesn’t matter that there are notices on file that if anyone comes to the house, they are to knock first and get permission to enter yard, it’s just common sense and courtesy to do that. Apparently many in the South Florida area lack those two things.

If they lack common courtesy along with common sense I supposed that’d be proven while walking through the yard to the cable box and  listening to barking from within the yard/house, dodging a few land ‘mines’ from 100 lb doberman because they still haven’t grasped the idea there’s a dog in the yard? If that didn’t do it, not sure why the deep barking from within the house didn’t get their attention. Seems nothing really gets their attention until they see a 100 lb doberman come barreling around the corner of the house and then and only then did it enter their mind there was a dog there and perhaps they should’ve knocked on the door FIRST!

Or better yet is when they hear the chihuahua (all 5 lbs of him) barking insanely and they kinda laugh it off until…doberman comes charging out and scares the bajeebers out of the poor sole who’s standing there laughing at “what could the chihuahua do to me” or other comments like “oh wow such a big dog” in their sarcastic tone…until….doberman comes to ‘greet’ them. Then they’re singing a different tune!

C’mon common sense and courtesy could very well save them from a dog attack, but guess to them it somehow makes more sense to unlock a clip on a gate, enter the yard, dodge ‘land mines’ and take a chance in encountering anyone that may not want them in the yard (be it human or dog) rather than take 2 seconds and knock on the door to ask permission. Yea that makes sense! NOT!

Eco Tuesday: BPA’s, Water Bottles

Posted by Tara Burner on June 24, 2008

In my first post for today I talked about traveling to state parks.
When you do that you’re going to need and want to bring your own drink.
What do you carry your drink in? Is it a plastic bottle that contains toxin Bisphenol A(BPA)?
Is it a bottle that’s free of toxin Bisphenol A(BPA)? I certainly hope so.
If you don’t have BPA free bottles, visit the site below to get yours now in time for your hot summer travels.
I never leave home without mine.

Reusable bottles that are BPA free
You can get your reusable bottles
here. They’re a smart, sustainable alternative to “use once & toss” disposables. They save you money while saving precious natural resources by cutting down on the trillions of cans and bottles trashed each year. And they’re BPA free, so no toxic worries.

Eco Tuesday: Visit State Parks

Posted by Tara Burner on

Did you know that most state parks only have a nominal fee to enter, much more affordable than an amusement or theme park.

You don’t have to drive far (usually) to get to a State Park. You can check for nearby state parks by usually visiting your State’s web site or go to Google and put in “your state” State Parks (ie: FL State Parks) and you’ll be amazed at what can be practically in your own back yard.

Play tourist in your local area, experience nature, share it with your family and friends. Enjoy.

You often times can also find eco tours in your state as well. These can range from nature walk to kayaking, hiking in local areas where they point out eco aspects and help you understand and appreciate the local environment even more.

So, this summer stick close to home and enjoy all your local parks.

When working as an independent distributor, rep, consultant

Posted by Tara Burner on June 21, 2008

According to Dictionary.com the word independent means:
working for oneself or for a small, privately owned business.
not relying on another or others for aid or support.
not subject to another’s authority or jurisdiction; autonomous; free: an independent businessman.

However; in the direct sales business world, independent should really mean something more like:
separate from main company, yet still under the authority of main company though responsible for making an effort to promote the business or you will fail on your own, though you have support and guidance and marketing tools provided to you from main company.

Tmobile & excellent customer service

Posted by Tara Burner on June 20, 2008

Wow a cell phone company who repeatedly excels in great customer service. I’m impressed…again.

See, the other day my cell phone decided it wanted to venture off into the big yonder via the easiest exit…the toilet.

Well, I did get it out and YES the water was clean toilet water before I snatched my wonderful phone from the water only to discover that no matter how much blow drying, blowing it out w/compressed air and letting it dry that phone was not coming back to life!

So, no major problem…I had 2 cell phones, 1 each w/2 different companies. I’ll just transfer the phone number from one to the other since I rarely used my original Tmobile #

It took me over 30 mins on automated phone nonsense with the original company to just get my account number and ID so I could authorize the transfer of the phone #

Today I had to call Tmobile as the voice mail hadn’t gone through yet and it’d been 48 hours, the woman on the phone who was in IL (sorry don’t remember her name) was mega sweet, nice, outgoing and even talked while we waited for the system to update my voice mail options.

I was totally shocked, only a few mins on hold, a live FRIENDLY person and she resolved my problem in under 5 minutes!

And, get this…she thanked me for my biz and wished me a good day!

Not often heard of anymore, especially when dealing w/cell phone companies, so hats off to Tmobile…again!

Eco Tuesday: Car a/c on or off?

Posted by Tara Burner on June 17, 2008

Ahhhhh the big debate

it’s summer, it’s hot

you want to be green

do you drive with the car a/c on or do you turn it off? What is one to do?

You’ve heard claims on both sides so here’s the 411:

When you want to drive as green as you can:

when you’re going under 40 mph go ahead and roll down the window, turn the a/c off and enjoy the breeze.

But, if you’re driving over 40 mph roll up the window, turn on the a/c because the drag created by the windows being down at over 40 mph will outweigh the effect of not running the a/c.

Green Produce

Posted by Tara Burner on June 16, 2008

Ok, I’ll start off with produce since most people eat fruits, veggies in their daily diet.
Obviously the best way for yourself and the environment is to NOT buy fruits, veggies in cans or plastic containers.
You want to buy fresh and preferably local to you. I know this can be difficult for those who may want something that isn’t locally grown or is out of season but there are ways around that. You can can items when in season to enjoy later to help alleviate that problem.

Here are a few ways to make green changes!

Light Green (where you’re making some changes)
1)Eat organic when possible
2)Wash and peel produce (especially if it’s not organic)
3)Eat a variety of produce to get all the nutrients you need

Green (where you’re making even more changes)
1)Buy from local markets — if you don’t know where a local farm market is you can visit http://www.localharvest.org to find those in your area

Dark Green (where you’re making big changes to help)
1)Grow your own produce, fruit trees
2)Buy from local markets even if not organic because you can wash, peel and it’ll have less of an effect on the environment than the gas, waste, carbon used to transport from other further away areas.
3)Join a food co-op. They also can be found on http://www.localharvest.org and now in some local papers and on http://www.backpage.com and http://www.craigslist.org there are some advertised, depending on your area.

Desperation: desperate cries for sales.

Posted by Tara Burner on June 13, 2008

des·per·a·tion
[des-puh-rey-shuhn] –noun
1. the state of being desperate or of having the recklessness of despair.
2. the act or fact of despairing; despair.
Ok this probably won’t set well with some but it has to be said.

We’ve all seen the ads and postings on forums, yahoogroups and network arenas where someone is practically begging for sales and/or parties.

You can sense the desperation in their post.

“Please HELP me, I’m short of meeting my quota”

“HELP me, I need to send Jane to Girl Scout Camp and I didn’t know it was going to cost so much”

“Will you please please please hold a party for me because I have to have so many parties before I’m removed from the company”

“Please HELP me, it’s my son’s birthday and I need to have a party” (hmmm always wondered on these since birthday’s and holidays are same day every year, why didn’t this person just budget or plan ahead for it?)

Anyhow, I could go on and on but I think y’all get the idea.

All these posts sound desperate…All pleas and cries for help.

Sorry women but in business, you as the business owner or consultant, representative, distributor..whatever you want to call yourself, you are there for the CLIENT not vice versa. The client isn’t there for YOU. You are to provide a service, product, etc. that the client wants and can use and be happy with. The client shouldn’t be ‘guilted’ into buying from you.

The client should WANT to purchase from you, and it’s your “job” to market your product or service and show the client what they have to gain by your product or service.

It sounds pretty desperate when you see all the posts and emails crying for HELP. That’s not a very professional first impression that’s for sure. Desperation makes you appear far from professional, makes you look like you and/or your business are not of quality; otherwise, you wouldn’t have to beg people to buy from you.

Always wondered why I never saw any of these people post or email when they’re not totally desperate. Which they should be doing as they should be actively marketing and promoting their product as well as networking. Instead, they only post when they’re up against the wall and desperation has set in.

Guess they don’t realize that reliable, reputable, steady posters and networkers gain the confidence of potential clients moreso than the once a month cries of desperation.

If they’d only market regularly they’d appear serious and professional, then perhaps they’d have the sales they so desperately need.

Just food for thought from one who’s seen waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many cries for “Help, I’m only $300 short of meeting my quota. If I don’t get it in time, I’ll be kicked out of the company” lately.

Conduct yourselves professionally and maturely, not desperately and odds are you’d do better and not have to beg for sales!
